Service Description
Six 1-hour weekly remote ASL classes Class Size: Minimum 2, Maximum 11 Mondays 5:30-6:30 PM, July 20, 2020 - August 25, 2020. Pre-requisite: "Introduction to ASL," and "ASL for Beginners: Series 1," or basic knowledge in the manual alphabet, greetings, and introductions. COURSE DESCRIPTION Get rewarding results from taking an American Sign Language class from an ASL pro. All of our instructors are experienced and certified interpreters, practitioners, linguists, and/or native signers and are committed to your success. In these six sessions, participants will get a basic introduction and background of American Sign Language and Deaf Culture will be taught over 100 signs, and will build skills in basic conversational ASL. COURSE CONTENT This course is for participants with basic familiarity with ASL. Participants will receive instruction in basic conversational ASL including communicating about family, home, and work; basic emergency signs; basic ASL grammar; ettiquette and sign language encounters in both the hearing world and the Deaf community. COURSE STRUCTURE Classes 1 & 2: Introductions and sharing basic information about yourself. Basic ASL grammar structure. Facial Expressions: Recognizing Yes/No questions, Simple affirmative & negative sentences. Numbers 0-12. Answering yes/no questions. Classes 3 & 4: Navigating encounters in sign. Communicating about learning ASL. Referring to approximate & specific location. Asking for more information. Showing you understand. Asking for clarification. Numbers 13-20. Classes 5 & 6: Intro to Fingerspelling. Commands and requests. Manners and asking politely. Verbs that change movement. Indicating subject and object. Interruptions and apologies. Visual culture.
